Damp is rarely just a cosmetic issue. Left unchecked, persistent moisture strips plaster and decorations, rots skirtings and structural timber, feeds the black mould that harms indoor air quality, and quietly erodes the value of your home.
The single most important step is an accurate diagnosis — because rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation look almost identical on the wall but need completely different treatments. Getting this wrong is the most common reason damp “comes back” after work has been done.

The types of damp we treat
Each behaves differently and demands a different solution. Our survey confirms which one you are dealing with before any work is quoted.
Rising damp
Ground moisture drawn up through the wall by capillary action where the damp proof course is missing, has failed or has been bridged. It affects the lower metre of a wall, leaving tide marks and salt deposits.
Penetrating damp
Water finding its way in from outside — through failed pointing, cracked render, defective roofs, gutters or around openings. Unlike rising damp it can appear at any height and worsens after heavy rain.
Condensation & humidity
The most common form of damp in modern homes. Warm, moist air meeting cold surfaces forms condensation that feeds black mould. It is solved with the right ventilation and heating balance, not a DPC.
Below-ground & basement damp
Cellars and basements sit against wet ground under constant water pressure, so they need a proper waterproofing system — barrier tanking or a maintainable cavity drainage system — designed to BS 8102.

Rising damp typically affects the lower sections of walls (up to about 1 metre) and leaves tide marks or salt deposits. Condensation tends to appear on cold surfaces, around windows and in poorly ventilated areas, and often comes with black mould. Most residential damp proofing projects are completed within 2-5 days, depending on the size and complexity of the work. Specialist re-plaster then needs several weeks to dry fully before final decoration. We give you a clear timeline at survey stage.
