Preserve the fabric, protect the future
Damp proofing fixes a moisture problem that already exists. Property preservation is different: it protects the materials your home is built from, so they stay sound, weather-tight and attractive for as long as possible.
Every building material ages. Brick and stone absorb driving rain, mortar joints erode, render cracks, timber dries out or weathers, and roof coverings slowly lose their protection. Each small change lets more water and frost into the fabric, and the decline speeds up from there.
The key is using the right material for the building. Older solid-walled homes need breathable products, such as lime mortars, mineral finishes and vapour-permeable water repellents, that keep rain out while still letting the wall dry. Sealing them with the wrong modern product can trap moisture and cause the very damage you were trying to prevent. Our surveyors specify materials that work with your property, never against it.

What we preserve
Each part of your home weathers in its own way and needs its own protective material. Our survey looks at the whole building fabric before we recommend anything.
Brick & stone masonry
Porous brick and natural stone soak up driving rain, which leads to frost damage, spalling and cold, damp walls. A breathable masonry water-repellent cream sharply reduces water uptake while letting the wall release moisture.
Mortar joints & pointing
Mortar is designed to be the sacrificial part of a wall. Once it erodes, water goes straight into the masonry. We repoint with a mortar matched to the wall, using lime for older solid walls, so the joints protect the bricks rather than damage them.
External & structural timber
Fascias, cladding, sole plates, beams and roof timbers are protected with specialist timber preservatives and breathable coatings that guard against moisture, fungal decay and wood-boring insects.
Roofs, render & rainwater goods
Protective roof coatings, sound render and working gutters and downpipes keep water off and away from the building, which is the first line of defence for every other material.

Signs your property needs preserving
None of these is an emergency on its own, but each one shows the fabric of your home is starting to lose its protection.

The preservation materials we use
We choose each material to suit the age, construction and exposure of your home. Breathability always comes first.
Masonry water-repellent cream
A breathable cream that soaks deep into brick, stone and mortar. It repels driving rain while still letting the wall release trapped moisture, which helps keep walls drier and warmer and reduces frost damage.
Lime & matched-mortar repointing
Failed joints are raked out and repointed in a mortar that matches the strength and breathability of the wall. Lime mortars allow older solid walls to dry out through the joints instead of through the bricks.
Timber preservatives & protective coatings
Specialist preservatives protect sound timber against fungal decay and insect attack, followed by breathable finishes that shed water without trapping moisture in the wood.
Roof coatings & mineral finishes
Protective roof coating systems and breathable mineral paints and renders weatherproof the outer skin of the building while keeping it vapour-permeable.

Everything you might be wondering
Damp proofing treats a moisture problem that is already inside the building, such as rising or penetrating damp. Property preservation is protective. It uses materials like water-repellent creams, matched mortars, timber preservatives and roof coatings to shield the building fabric from weather and decay, so problems are far less likely to start.
Walls, especially in older solid-walled homes, take on some moisture and need to release it again. Hard cement pointing, plastic paints and non-breathable sealers trap that moisture inside, where it causes frost damage, damp and decay. Breathable materials keep rain out while still letting the wall dry.
It suits most brick, stone and mortar walls that are in sound condition. Any failed pointing or damaged masonry should be repaired first. Our surveyor will check the wall and confirm whether it is the right choice before anything is applied.
Yes. Protecting sound materials costs far less than repairing them once water has got in. For homeowners who want to keep a property in excellent condition, preservation is a sensible long-term investment in its fabric and value.
Yes. Much of our work is on older brick and stone homes across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. We specify lime mortars and breathable finishes where the building needs them, and we never use materials that could harm its traditional construction.
