What is Dry Rot Treatment?
Dry rot (Serpula lacrymans) is a wood-destroying fungus that thrives on damp timber and can spread aggressively, even travelling across masonry to reach fresh wood. It breaks timber down until it becomes dry, brittle and cracked into cube-like sections. Because it can spread behind plaster and under floors, dry rot must be traced to its full extent and the moisture feeding it must be resolved — treating the visible damage alone will not stop it.

The warning signs to look for
Catching the problem early keeps repairs simpler and less costly. If you notice any of these signs, it is worth booking a specialist survey before the damage spreads.

- Timber that is dry, brittle and cracked into cube-like blocks
- A distinctive damp, musty, mushroom-like smell
- Fine grey strands or cotton-wool-like growth on timber or walls
- Rusty-red spore dust around the affected area
- Fungal fruiting bodies resembling a soft, pancake-like growth
- Timber that crumbles easily when pressed

Everything you might be wondering
Dry rot can spread quickly in the right conditions and is able to travel across masonry to reach new timber. Prompt, thorough treatment is essential to stop it and prevent serious structural damage.
Not if the moisture source is resolved. Dry rot needs damp timber to survive, so correcting the underlying moisture problem is central to a lasting cure — which is why we always fix the cause.
